When you are really serious about stroke rehabilitation, you take people out into the world and re-teach them to navigate day-to-day responsibilities so they can resume a normal life post stroke. Recovery Lane, located in our therapy room, simulates Main Street USA with a street, a traffic light, stop sign, ATM machine, mailbox, and store fronts. There’s even a supermarket with a refrigerated section, shelves and a cashier. It’s amazing to see how independent people become once they learn the skills to function in their own community. They feel like they have their lives back, even if it is with a little modification. We make sure they are aware of their limitations and that they are taught how to compensate safely.
